The month of October holds a significant event that aims to raise awareness for an important cause – National Breast Cancer Awareness Month. This blog will focus on educating people about breast cancer, a disease that develops malignant cells in the breast tissues and can spread to surrounding areas.

Statistics show that breast cancer affects both men and women. Each year, approximately 70,000 men and women aged 15 to 39 are diagnosed with cancer in the US.  Breast cancer is also the most common cancer for women in this age group. However, it is the most commonly diagnosed cancer in women and the second leading cause of death. Shockingly, one in eight women will be diagnosed with breast cancer in their lifetime. The good news is that early detection plays a significant role in combating breast cancer. When detected in the localized stage, the 5-year relative survival rate is 100 percent.

Performing monthly breast self-exams, understanding the signs and symptoms of breast cancer, and knowing your family history can aid in early detection. A change in nipple or breast shape or a clear or bloody nipple discharge can indicate breast cancer. If you notice any of these signs, it’s important to seek medical attention immediately.

Breast cancer survivors may undergo breast cancer reconstruction to rebuild the breast mound, areola, and nipple. This type of procedure can help women regain confidence in their appearance and take back control of their bodies after cancer.

Dr. Scot Bradley Glasberg in NYC performs procedures throughout the entire spectrum of Cosmetic and Reconstructive Plastic Surgery. He has particular interests in all aspects of breast reconstruction, cosmetic surgery of the breast and body, wound healing, and regenerative medicine. By raising awareness about breast cancer, we can help individuals detect it early, seek treatment, and ultimately improve survival rates.
